chauffeur
This conjures up an image of a smart, uniformed, cap-wearing driver taking the wealthy and famous to their next appointment. Its French origin, however, is a much dirtier story. The Modern French 'chauffer' means to heat ('chaud' meaning 'hot') and therefore 'chauffeur' is the one who heats or stokes the engine. He is originally the man responsible for putting coal onto the fire to create the steam to drive early day engines.
