This term is currently a title equivalent to the male 'Lord' or simply a polite way of referring to a woman. Its origins are much more humble however. It comes from the Old English: 'hlæfdige' which in turn is made up of 'hlaf' meaning loaf or bread and '-dige' meaning maid or originally 'kneeder'
